Yesterday afternoon we decided to do a neighbourhood walk to check out all the cool houses that have been decorated for Halloween. We took our pencils and clipboards and learned how to make tally marks to collect data about how many Halloween things we could find. We counted spider webs, jack o lanterns, witches, skeletons and tombstones. As we walked we used comparative language like " more " and "less" to talk about the data we collected. However, we still had a lots of free time to play in the forest afterwards!

In math we continue daily calendar and estimation activities, and today we had our first Number Talk. Mrs. Kristensen showed us an image on the Apple TV, and asked us, "what math stories live here?" The boys and girls used white boards to explain their mathematic thinking. Some of us counted the items we saw, some created tally sheets, some saw number stories/ equations
(ex. 6 bats + 4 skeletons = 10), while others created multiple groups of items ( ex. There are 4 pizza slices and they each have 3 slices of pepperoni. That means there are 12 pepperoni slices in all.) Mrs. K was very impressed with how many ways we could all use the same picture to see so many different possibilities!!!
