To support our unit on materials and force and motion, we used the forest as the site for experiments about movement. Mrs. Kristensen asked us to choose a ball from the bin, and then to explore ways we could get it to move, without touching it. The children worked together to create ramps and funnelling systems to help move the balls along. The boys and girls used unit vocabulary such as "push," "pull," "force," and "momentum" to explain how their object moved and why. Some of us also independently discovered that sweeping the forest floor from debris, and creating a smooth surface, helped to move the balls further, and at a quicker rate.
Inside the school, we continued investigating materials by going on a scavenger hunt, and recording objects based upon the materials that they were made from. We are all able to identify objects made of glass, plastic, wood, fabric, and metal.
Gymnastic is our theme in Physical Health and we have been loving it!!
Exciting things have been happening in the Open Area as well. On Wednesday Mr. Kelly brought salmon eggs into the tanks we have in the area. We each got to hold one, name it, and make a wish for it as we gently placed it into the water. We will be watching them hatch and how they change over the coming weeks.
