Yesterday we braved the rain and head into the forest for Outdoor Learning, and the children were so excited! We had some free play and building time, then we went to our sit spots to make observations of the changes in the forest.
Afterwards we shared some of our observations and discussed what the local forest animals might be doing to prepare for the changing weather and the cold. In small groups we were given a pile of cards featuring local animals and insects. We made predictions based on information we already knew about the animals, and changes that we may have already seen. When we gathered back at the story log, we read a non fiction book about animal adaptations, and discussed words like migration, hibernation, and camouflage.

It was great to see that the children were prepared for the weather as well, in boots, waterproof coats, and rain pants for some. Some children complained of cold hands, so mittens and a toque are becoming more necessary for our Tuesday afternoon adventures.

Today was 50th day of school, or as Nikhil said, "our halfway to 100 day!" We got a special visit from Zero the Hero, and then played Race to 50. This is a great game to reinforce number recognition, sequence and counting to 50. Mrs. K has added a link below where you can get a free downloadable copy of the game to play at home. All you will need is a 6 sided dice and some markers.
For an additional challenge, have your child practice "counting on" after they have rolled the dice.

The children were very excited about today's Wonder Wednesday
question," What is an optical illusion?" It is a question that they created themselves after Mrs. K read us "Hello Red Fox," by Eric Carle. The book was full of optical illusions. Thanks to Henry for sharing this one as well!
